BA (Photography) equipment advice for new students

EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS

Students should wait until they have been accepted into the program before purchasing any items on this list. If in doubt about any of the items on this list, please consult the Program Manager or First Year Academic Advisor.

BASIC EQUIPMENT

CAMERA: Interchangeable lens Camera (ILC) – DSLR or Mirrorless

  • We recommend that your camera should be an interchangeable lens camera from Canon, Nikon or Sony. Students should consider purchasing the camera body separately, i.e. without the kit lens (see Lenses).
  • Full Frame sensor is preferred.

MEMORY CARDS

  • Two 16 Gigabyte High Speed memory cards or one 32 Gigabyte High Speed memory card, and a USB card reader. A card reader is essential.

LENSES

  • A high quality, medium range, zoom lens is recommended, covering a range of 24-70mm. Please feel free to discuss this with your lecturer before you buy.

LIGHT METER

  • Sekonic L-308s Flashmate (digital incident, reflective, and flash).

TRIPOD

  • Manfrotto, 190 with 804rc2 head or preferably the Manfrotto 410 Junior (or equivalent) + carry bag.

COMPUTER

  • There are computer labs that are available for you to use on campus, but we would recommend that you own high performance laptop (Mac or PC) and a portable external hard drive.

ESSENTIAL FOR MATERIALS & PROCESSES COURSE

Reflector

  • 1 x 107 cm twist fold reflector or equivalent – white & silver, or white, silver & gold. These can be purchased quite cheaply online.

Flash or ‘Speedlite’ Unit

  • A dedicated flash (the same make as your camera) with a tilt and swivel feature.

Foam core reflectors (white) and cutters (black) 5mm

  • These can be purchased from various art stores (see the link below) You will need:

Paper

  • 1 x A4 white (photocopy paper is OK, alternatively if you purchased your reflectors and cutters you can use them) 1 x A4 mid tone gray
  • 1 x A4 black (alternatively if you purchased your reflectors and cutters you can use them
  • 3 x A1/A0 sheet mid tone gray
  • 1 x A1/A0 postal tube for transporting paper to avoid damage
